When it comes to work and business, I for a long time have existed in the space which can be labelled as CONTROL.
Nothing wrong with it, it's just that I'm becoming present to the limitations of existing in that space.
When I'm being CONTROL, the tools available to me are generally limited to:
- being nice (can you please do this for me.. )
or
- being a cunt (do this or there will be XYZ consequences)
And that's when I'm in position of responsibility. When I'm a subordinate, it gets worse.
The space I exist in tends to be along the lines of I'LL DO IT MY WAY, which manifests in me usually:
- listening to instructions and then disregarding them (and doing the task my way instead)
or
- resentfully obeying, but complaining my myself about how much of an idiot my superior is
And when you think about it, what I just described is where 99% of workplaces operate. Is it any wonder, then, that "going to work" is something that drains us, something that we survive through the week and try to forget as soon as the weekend arrives?
I'm becoming present to another way of being in a workplace - that of being in the space of OPPORTUNITY.
This space manifests in me being there for another and going beyond my own comfort zone to create opportunities which are important to other people - and then to support them in the pursuit of those opportunities.
What would happen if your boss came to you and said, "What can I do for you to make your job easier?" .. and actually listened?
What would happened if you, as a boss, had an employee stop you and say - "I know you must have a lot on your plate - what can I do to make this workplace work better?" .. and actually meant it?
The Boardroom is for people who want to create workplaces which exist in a space which is beyond of DOING WORK. Beyond CONTROL, beyond I'LL DO IT MY WAY.
It's for you if you want to be in a workplace which is centered around a common mission, a passion and a vision - rather than bickering, "I'm just doing what I get paid to do", power struggles and "my boss is an idiot".
Here, I invite you to have a conversation about:
- what do you want to achieve at work?
- what's in the way of you achieving it?
- would you like to create your life in a way so that your job is also your purpose in life?
However, discussion is just the tip of the iceberg. The Boardroom will be much more than a place to talk.
It will be a hub where you can get hands-on experience in dealing with your issues at work - by participating in creation of real life projects which solve real world problems.
The Empowerment Project is the first of such projects, which I'm sure you've already heard about. It has a dedicated forum all to itself in this part of the board. And I invite you to have a look at updates on what's happening with the project on its blog:
http://www.attractioninstitute.org/homelessness/I'm responsible for creating it in such a way that not only fulfills on its vision, but also creates opportunities for choose to become part of it to grow as employees, as leaders and as human beings.
If you feel like I'm not fulfilling on those promises, please call me on it - I want you to hold me accountable for the promises I make. And if you'd like to become part of it, visit the blog and check out the "Get Involved" tab.
